Referring to its high density, its name origins from the greek word barus (heavy), it is also named heavy spar. Usually its tabular, prismatic crystals issue with a hydrothermal process. It has many applications in the industry, due to its good radioton absorption properties it is used in nuclear reactors and X-ray labs. In Hungary it is a relatively common mineral and can be found in more places. It has large localities in Germany, Great Britain, USA etc.
