

Its name origins from the latin word ’galena’ which was used for lead consisting ores. This relatively common mineral is mined since 3000 BC. It usually occurs in hydrothermal ore veins commonly in cubic or octahedron shaped crystals. It may contain mostly silver, zinc, antimony, copper. The ancient romans used to extract the silver from it. More galena localities are known in Hungary: Gyöngyösoroszi, Recsk, Pátka. Other localities: Czech Republic (Pribram), Germany (Harz Mountains), Russia, USA, Canada, China etc.
